the Cap'n by Chuckdee the Cap'n by Chuckdee
... first and foremost I gotta say: "I HATE YOU DAVE WILKINS!!!" hahahah ... I did this one or two years back just for the hell of it, BUT I did it AFTER Wilkins had done a "War Bonds" type piece with the Cap (for SDCC I think!)

... anyway, Con ended, time passed and I forgot about Dave's piece, THEN my brain went: "HEY, I got a good idea, why don't we do Cap jumping off a WW2 bomber??? Sure Brain! why not!!!" ... little did my brain know that it was TOTALLY APING Wilkins piece subconsciously... I drew it, put it away (just found it again recently) and then one day... checking out Dave's stuff I went DOHH!!! ..... so therefore I hate Dave for making me ape him.... I hate you WILKEEEEEEENS!!! .... check his (and better) version out on his Deviant page! (one day I'll learn how to link) :)

... and for those of you that might wanna know: this is Pigmas, grey Copic markers and white pencil on grey canson paper... OH, and a bit of 'tinting' in Photoshop!

...oh yeah, and Dave's composition!!! hahahah

Thanks, I was wondering how you tinted the piece on photoshop. Did you use color balance, hue/saturation etc.

Thanks for replying.

Thanks for replying. I mean how do you give a picture you just inkwashed two different tints, such as in your recent Supergirl piece with the purple and orange tones.:)

I don't mean to be a jerk or anything but it seems like the barrel of the pistol is at a different angle that the grip. Like its kind of twisted or something.

Regardless, awesome piece.

I see what you're saying... I didn't define the grip as much as should have... I used that little 'glint' to define the upper corner but maybe it wasn't enough to make it obvious. :)

I could never afford (I mean my parents) gi joes. Too many, didn't know anyone but cobra commander and serpentor. What is it with villains? Too cool. And I still think yours is better then the other dude you hate so much. :-)

EVERYTHING in the 80's was 'military gear' oriented in some way or another, at least all the 'action hero' stuff... ALIENS and MadMax were another BIG BIG influence 'gearwise'.... all that stuff got me into the 'functionality' of things, even if it's total B.S., it should still look believable! :)

Slight issue with the plane in the background. Unless the plane is moving backwards, the door should be ahead of Cap. Love the drawing.

that's how fast Cap jumps!!! hahaha... I totally see what you're saying and you are indeed correct! :) ... I placed the plane there for the sake of composition and the physics of it totally skipped my mind!

I like the kickin' star and the scaly armor! I looked for the evidence of aping, but I couldn't find the image on DW's site. This is top notch work. Others can inspire us and be our muse even unbeknownst to us. I have been inspired by Frazetta and many others when working or coming up with designs. Keep producing and doing your best!

... check out Dave Wilkins stuff (he's got a pretty damn cool gallery! ), and it's a Captain American in there! :) ...hehe, it wasn't on purpose, BUT it's damn-near the same thing! BUT yeah, you are right... Frazzeta is a great example of how much stuff we don't know is in our subconscious until you see it again and realize JUST how much something influenced you.... Dave and I are friends, so this one was just funny! hahaha!!!
