Spidey vs. Rino by Chuckdee Spidey vs. Rino by Chuckdee
... this is a piece I did two or three years ago just for fun... I had a bit of time and I really felt like drawing the Rino for some reason.... actually, Spidey's rogues gallery reminds me A LOT of Batman's in the sense that they are both filled with Circus-freak show type characters, and those are FUUUUUUUUUN as hell to draw!!!

the original of this was done on gray canson paper, and then rendered with copic grey markers and white pencil for the hi-lites and stuff... and just 'cause I can't help it, I did a bit of Photoshopin' to help separation (grey paper scans like CRAP!!!)

Always loved your stuff, dating back to Brass vol.2. Speaking of which, would you do a Brass vol. 3? I would love to see a current interpretation. How 'bout ya contact Mr. Bennett and see what can be done, lol. One can dream can't they?

Well maybe it's just me but, Spidey's mask has changed subtly over the years.

There's the old look: [link]
There's the way Todd McFarlane did it: [link]

And then there's the current style: [link]

It's the way the eyes are drawn of course, but...it's just something I noticed.

gotcha! Spidey's maks is just like any other hero... every artist tweeks it a bit to taste... did you ever see Todd McFarlane's version of SpiderMan? tha twas a a favorite of mine in the 90's, but then there's the classic Romita version, Buscema's, Ditko's, Joe Mad's... every artist injects a bit of their taste when they draw their version of classic Superheroes... in my case, I like a very lean SpiderMan (kinda like Bruce Lee), and I like the eyes to be more angular and actually blink and move... hehe, it makes no sense, but I always loved the artist that did that. :)

Really love the details on Rhino's mask. Most artist update his costume to be more mech and less animalistic but this is a really cool take on his suit. It fits with the circus vibe :D

Not bad, although if your going to do something like this, it should be within a story board. But pretty good, I'm getting close to your style, comics are challenging.

My two favorite comic characters: Batman and Spider-man....the greatest of rogue galleries. What would happen if you interchanged them? I wonder how they would fare. Awesome work as always. Do you think your style changed much since this piece?

...I don't know... what do you think? this piece is about two or three years old, so I don't think my stuff has changed much since, but it does look a bit different 'style-wise', but I think that might just be because of the tools I used... sometimes that alone forces a new approach and by doing so changes your style a bit... that's one of the things I love about using different tools, it forces you to 'solve' things in a different way. :)

I think your drawing is even more steady/clean/confident now than back when this drawing was made. I can see that this is still you, but with maybe a little more thinking and strategy involved. Your drawings today look like you are shooting from your hip...confidant, cool, and dynamic. As if you have been there, done that, and taking names. lol I still would love to see what you would do with the characters for Spider-man's rogue gallery, similar to your Arkham City work. I can't afford a game system (since the game cube lol) so I had to just watch someone else play the game on Youtube...I'm really sad at the ending. I hope it doesn't mean the end...

Is there a shortcut or a method to the way you create these dynamic backgrounds? Even here I can see your designs at play like you did in the comic series for Arkham.

hahaha... sometimes deadlines FORCE you to shoot from the hip, AND many many times that is actually a good thing, no time to over-think stuff! :) ... and as far as Arkham goes, who knows man, I sure as hell LOVED the game though.

Indeed, I've often said that the only rogues gallery in comics that can be considered as good as Batman's in Spidey's.

Oh Rhino, when will you learn you aren't cool?

I always found Spider-Man's rogues more in common with Flash's rogues for how human some of them are. Batman's are more insane and twisted. They become more monsters than men. Not many of Spidey's are as tragic and twisted than Batman's.

Spidey's Rogues Gallery is one of the reasons I think he's such an enduring character. They're all really memorable and have big personalities. Rhino is a personal fave. I really like the Scorpion, Shocker, and Mysterio, too. All undervalued villains in my book. I love classic Scorpion's angle with JJ. Always thought that'd make him perfect for a movie villain.
