... sometimes some of the most fun things to work on a game is ANYTHING that changes the routine a bit, even if that's something as simple as designing 'energy signatures'.... this kind of stuff is not generally the concept designers job, BUT I find it's good to give the particle FX artist a rough idea of what the hell I was thinking....
....take the top cannon for example: it doesn't have a 'canon' or anything that shows "this is where the blast comes from', SO with that one I felt I HAD to roughly show what the hell it does... otherwise it just looks like a big flashlight or something.
Energy signatures are also VERY important I think in being able to differentiate 'factions'... these here are 'S.T.A.R. labs', so I figure they shoot energy blasts (vs. say, League of Assassins, who shoot mainly flechettes)..... then again, it's just nice to get away from something as 'specific' as designing tech, to something much more abstract, in the case of coming up with 'energy signature' ideas.
if I'm not mistaken, this is an exclusive PS3 game... I think it's 'free to play' now, but I'm sure you can google it, just search for DC Universe Online! (I think)
Sorry. The only person that has energy weapon capabilities.. is me. Real energy weapons would be found on my ship and its AI (some weapons are not on AI). Energy weapons that I have are: Laser; Infinitely bright bolt of white light LaserRed (Only found on the type of AI that is materialized outside of the ship); Infinitely bright bolt of red light Microwave; Microwave radiation that can be seen Plasma; Charged particles of heated energy EMD ( Electromagnetic Discharge ); homing charged particles of electromagnetic energy Fusion; Blob of fusion construct Omega ( Trails of electricity; infinite volts ); White and slightly blue tunnels of electricity
Most of us forget or don't even realize how much thought goes in to designing even something as simple as a energy signature. It's a nice insight and great job.
it's really fun stuff Dude... if you think about it, most of us that grew up in the 80's or earl 90's, so much of movie or Nintendo memories have to do with energy signatures, SPECIALLY with sidescrolling 'spaceship games', or MegaMan... any of those... energy signatures were such a big part of'em!
Loving the designs, and I imagine a lot of thought must go into designing different kinds of energy signatures for futuristic weapons. Think of all the shmups that have been made in gaming history...all those different kinds of shots...
